The name of the client doesn't matter in this fundraising story for a client. What matters is that a couple stood before a room filled with parents who's children attend the same school as their child and proposed a challenge to them.
The challenge was deeply rooted for this couple who not only wanted to help their own child, but to add an educational building that would house the education of hundreds of thousands of children for the next 50-80 years.
Just 24 prior to this couple taking the stage, a Fund-a-Need had been planned for months. A presentation, a well produced video presenting the message of the need of the Fund-a-Need and of course the arrangement of the ask and collection of bids. It all changed. It changed hour by hour on the day of the event.
The original Fund-a-Need was scratched and a new plan of presentation featured the surprise call to the stage of this couple. There was a lighthearted "you must be wondering what we are doing up here." As they expressed their appreciation of the school they started zeroing on the point. They wanted to present a challenge to everyone in the room that the entire amount of money needed to pay for a new education center could be done in our Fund-a-Need ask. They set the challenge to match dollar for dollar up to over a half million dollars! Guests gasped then broke into cheer with a long standing ovation.
When the moment began to settle I quickly engaged the audience. A large donor in the front. Standing ovation! Another large donation, then another and another! Standing ovations for each raised paddle! It continued with cheering or encouragement and standing ovation to everyone who donated! It was one of the most emotional, energetic and incredible Fund-a-Need auctions I have ever conducted.
Upon the collection of the final donation, we raised over $1.3 million dollars. All within 20-minutes! They had their building!
